Adding Text Widgets in WP 2.8.1</p>

I updated BlogTactics.com to the latest version of wordpress (WP 2.8.1) a couple of days ago and all of my sidebar text widgets just disappeared!

It’s taken me a little while to work out how to put them back, as it appears there’s no option for adding the old style text widgets in WP 2.8.1., so I’ve made a quick video to show you how I managed to get my text widgets put back in to my blog sidebars so you can do the same if you need to.

The video is only 7 mins long, so it’s not a biggy, and you can find the text widgets plugins on the Top WordPress Plugins Page

Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi Matt,
I updated to wp 28.1 as soon as it was available and had no problems with my widgets, I use over 40 plugins on my main blog and had no problems. Perhaps it works for some themes and not others, I use the flexibility theme and very rarely do i have any issues.

it could well be that the “Text” widget that is integral to the theme I’m using is interfering with the standard text widgets feature of WP, as it seems to have disappeared for me.
I’ll investigate further as I find time to upgrade my other blogs and get to the bottom of it…
at least the video ill help anyone who has the same problem, I hope.
🙂

Matt I had HUGE problems when I updated my “Expert List Building” blog from 2.8 to 2.81…it seemed to blow up and go into database overdrive. It took my hosting support team to fix it!

Anyhow looking down the bottom of the widget page I have a text widget – just the same as 2.8.

And my sidebars seem unchanged. Yes I have cleaned them up a bit since your review but to check it I popped some text in one and published it.

As normal for me so I wonder what else has happened on blogtactics?

All The Best

Alex & Matt,
I think some plugins have issues that no longer play well with WordPress.
I have blogs that still have the text widgets, and some that do not allow me to do anything at all with the sidebar widgets (gulp). So I am in the process of disabling all the plugins and seeing which one causes the problems.

I’ll let you know what I find out!

Micheal

Go to your Dashboard and then Widgets, look at the top near the right. You will see ‘Screen Options’, click on ti and enable ‘Accessibility Mode’. That should settle your problems.

If not it could be the theme you are using, trying activating the default theme and see if your problem disappears. If so then it is your theme causing the problem.

Also make sure you have the latest browser version on your computer. My preference for WordPress blogging is Firefox.

Cheers
Damian

Hi Matt,
I just upgraded yesterday, and I thought Yikes! Did I lose everything and not notice? So I just went and checked, and it is all there, whew. It must be a theme issue, I am using Revolution.

When I was going through my site editing yesterday I was finding some strange script, “

It’s most likely a problem with your theme’s coding. Try to update your theme files according to WordPress standards from their codex section.

From the comments that have been posted here it does seem likely that it’s down to my theme.
cheers,
Matt

Hey Matt,
Thanks for another great video. With the template I am using, I haven’t been able to use the widgets at all as they throw off the template side bars . I have to add my my widget text into the coding for the sidebar through “appearance editor”. I am going to try this and see if it will enable the widgets to work correctly. Thanks again.

Aloha – June

Great video & solution for anyone that is experiencing this problem. I usually tend to wait a little while before upgrading, just to see if anyone has any problems with the latest update first.

Everything is fine with mine, I’m using Flexibility theme.

Paul.

I just Stumbled! your post because this is the thing I am afraid of most when upgrading WP.You never know what will happen with all this free plug ins. They do not have upgrade or support and they might not be completable with new version of WP. I have never heard that text widget is not working, maybe it is about the theme compatibility. Thank you for the great post.
